Well Integrity Plus
Offshore drilling projects are managed by a "rig team", a small group of engineers, wellsite supervisors and logistics specialists. The rig team designs the well, sources tangibles and services, and provides rigsite supervision; they safeguard the interests and reputation of the oil company by constructing a well which will remain pressure-tight for 25 years or more. They must prevent blowouts and spills, ensure a safe working environment and maintain close control of a complex operation 24 hours a day.
Recent years have seen a surge in newbuild activity for drillships, jackups and semi-submersible rigs. Expansion of the rig fleet has resulted in a dilution of experience in rig teams.
With high stakes riding on the effectiveness of the rig team, it is important to look beyond individual skills to the performance of the combined team. Working systems must be robust in the face of changes, consistently delivering high-quality results.
Fraser Offshore Ltd has developed its management system in the demanding drilling conditions of the UK Southern North Sea; we recognise that individual experience and competence does not necessarily translate into effective team performance. For this reason, when we designed our signature training programme for drilling operations management, it was given the working title "Well Integrity Plus" - not just blowout prevention and the delivery of a pressure-tight well, but a system of work by which the rig team can maximise cost-effectiveness while delivering fundamental objectives of personnel safety and environmental protection.
Well Integrity Plus has evolved into an intensive and effective training school - the WIP® School - which takes over where conventional well control and drilling practises schools finish. Drawing on real-life offshore experience and the recent Montara and Macondo blowouts, the WIP school is proprietary to Fraser Offshore Ltd.
